Reflection 2014-2015 Computer Literacy

My last blog for the school year. Reflection is the time that one looks back at a specific period of time and determines the personal impact they had.  This reflection typically focuses on positive outcomes in that time period. But the most growth, according to my mother, is the negative outcome or roadblocks that impact you the most. This school year I have learned to use Microsoft office applications and create a blog. Each application had some hurdles to leap through, but once I learned the method and process steps, the tasks were achieved much quicker. Towards the end of the course, we created a resume and cover letter, which in my opinion, will help me out the most, as I look for a summer job. The assignment to look for careers and evaluate my skillsets, helped me understand some alternate career paths to pursue. This class was my favorite and it allowed me to be creative with my documents and power point slides.  From what I have discovered, corporate business is driven with power point presentations at a global scale.  I know from this class, I have the foundation to be successful in any career.

Life after highschool...what career path should I take?

During the past few weeks, I have been learning more about myself and what attributes I have and how I can use those to foster a healthy career.  This fostering includes mental, emotional, and financial health. I have taken a few surveys to explore my likes and dislikes, and areas where I can contribute to society. The two areas are within computer software/engineering and business management.  Both of these areas are no surprise to me, as my mother is an engineer and has her PHD in business and her strengths happen to be mine as well.  I think I will focus on software programming or design of computer games with a minor in business.  The salary range is from $50,000 to $500,000. The two jobs I looked at on Monster.com, both started out at $70,000.

Ethical Computer Use- Punishment required

This week I was able to study about computer use and what the law considers legal use of media and illegal use of media content. Illegal download or copying can apply to music, media, handwritten work, published papers, movies and video games. With the law behind the owners of the material, they can sue you.  I agree with the law on downloading movies, videos, and music as the creators of the material should be paid for their work.  If they intended for us to have their creative work, they would post it online with the ability to download it for free. If we did not have laws to support our work, then think of the hackers that are world wide that could take anything at anytime and not be punished.  Why spend millions of dollars on research and business plans or military operation strategies, when hackers could gain access for free and share with all our competitors. Laws are made to keep us safe and when terror strikes, there is a system to help us get justice.

Being a good digital citizen

This week I studied about digital citizenship.  The best bet is to behave the same way online as when you are in person. Have common courtesy and treat others with respect. Everyone is different and brings unique thoughts to the conversation.  Have a position outlook and try to broaden your intelligence by listening and have open dialogue. If you have a different view point, then you can always present your thoughts but in a positive manner.  One way to do this would be to start your sentence out like "you bring such an interesting perspective to this discussion, I was thinking differently about it and explain in detail". Collaboration brings the greatest growth in education and in entrepreneurship. You can discuss and create with international students. IF everyone was the same, the world would be very bland. If anyone posts harmful comments then do not engage in discussion with them.

Once published, lives are forever changed.

This week I had the chance to read "Once it is on the internet, it's there forever".
This got me to thinking, as a teenager, there are so many exciting events we attend.  These can be as simple as the basketball game or baseball league games during the summer.  As we tend to grow, we go to birthday parties or hang out with our friends on the weekend. We take pictures of ourselves being silly and post them on the social media sites.
As future college scholars and pillars of the community, these pictures and posts may come back to haunt us as our future girlfriends and peers at work, may not understand the message.  Future employers will be reviewing all social media to better understand their potential candidate and not hire them solely based upon their external behavior. The moral of this post, is to reflect prior to posting any pictures or written thoughts that you would be ashamed or embarrassed for your grandma to read or see.

Technology- Robot Dog launch

An interesting article was published on February 10, 2015 on robotic designs by Elizabeth Palermo. This article along with a video was released the same time that Spot was unveiled for mass media outlets. Spot is the newest robotic dog that can perform in rough terrains. The firm that design the robot is Boston Dynamics, a company owned by Google. This recent invention will assist with Department of Defense engagements.  Spot could be a rescue dog in wooded areas or high altitudes, where it is difficult for humans to maneuver.  I believe the most likely assignments for Spot will be in active combat.

Safe Passwords..Harder to create than you think!

The unthinkable act may have already happened to you?  Did you account get hacked?  Someone hacked my online gaming account, but I was able to report them and they were able to recover the account and all my games.

Passwords are required for all accounts online.  Did you ever think that you were creative and would never get hacked?  Well, don't think you are alone.  Many people create single level passwords and they get hacked every single day.  Melanie Pinola wrote an article in 2014 titled "Your Clever Password Tricks aren't protecting you from Today's Hackers". The hackers today have developed algorithms and unique software programming to pick out patterns and unique characteristics of passwords.  Something that would take a million years to crack can take less than one spring season to fully infiltrate your life.

I agree with the article that you should always have a two level coded password system to gain access to all accounts.  Secondly, you should always have different passwords to all your accounts.  Finally, you should try out 1Password which is a site that provides different coded passwords for you that will be safer than anyone that you can create on your own.
